Haunted Schools | Real Ghost Stories from Classrooms Around the World
There is something uniquely creepy about a school after dark. During the day, the hallways are filled with voices, footsteps and slamming doors. Once everyone goes home, those same familiar spaces can suddenly feel very different.
Maybe that is why haunted school stories are everywhere. Most of us remember hearing about a haunted bathroom, auditorium or classroom, but some schools have paranormal legends backed by unusual history, firsthand accounts and even mysterious security footage.
Here are four haunted schools with stories that are especially difficult to forget.
Pocatello High School, Idaho
Pocatello High School had a haunted reputation long before its most famous paranormal incident. Staff and students have reported unexplained footsteps, voices and even piano music coming from empty areas of the school. A former principal also described hearing what sounded like a basement door closing while he was supposedly alone in the building.
Then, during Christmas break in 2014, a security camera captured flickering lights followed by what appeared to be a strange shadowy or translucent figure moving through an empty hallway.
Could it have been a camera artifact, insect or reflection? Absolutely. But the fact that Pocatello High School ghost stories existed before the footage makes the video much more interesting.
Lee Williams High School, Arizona
If you're looking for the perfect setting for a haunted high school, building one over a cemetery is a pretty solid start.
Before Lee Williams High School in Kingman, Arizona, occupied the property, it was Pioneer Cemetery. Although families were given opportunities to relocate graves, not everyone was removed.
Over the decades, construction crews repeatedly discovered human remains on the school grounds. Around 2010, workers digging near the football bleachers uncovered seven coffins, some still containing personal belongings such as jewelry and cufflinks.
Even stranger are reports from graduation ceremonies. Witnesses have claimed to see mysterious people in the crowd wearing clothing from another era. The football field sits on land once occupied by the cemetery, and no one knows exactly how many graves may still remain beneath the campus.
Winchester College, England
Founded in 1382, Winchester College has had more than 600 years to accumulate ghost stories.
Its legends include founder William of Wykeham wandering College Hall and the spirit of seventeenth-century scholar Thomas Ken appearing around the school. More recent accounts are equally creepy. Guests staying at Winchester in the twentieth century reported rattling doors, apparitions inside bedrooms and even sheets being pulled from their beds during the night.
With generations of students living and studying inside buildings that have stood since the Middle Ages, Winchester may be one of the most atmospheric haunted schools in England.
The Dark Figure at SMK Pengkalan Chepa 2
Our strangest haunted school story comes from Kelantan, Malaysia, where frightening events unfolded at SMK Pengkalan Chepa 2 in 2016.
Students began screaming, fainting and reporting encounters with a mysterious black figure. Within days, teachers were experiencing strange symptoms and sightings as well. The situation eventually became so disruptive that the school temporarily closed and religious practitioners were brought in to perform prayers and spiritual treatments.
Reports continued for weeks, with more than 150 people eventually said to have been affected. Similar incidents even began appearing at nearby schools.
Researchers have suggested mass psychogenic illness as an explanation, with fear and physical symptoms spreading through a tightly connected community. It's certainly possible. Still, the reports from adult teachers—and the repeated descriptions of a dark figure during the early days of the outbreak—make the case especially unsettling.
Are Haunted Schools Really Haunted?
Old schools make noises. Pipes knock, doors shift, lights flicker and footsteps echo strangely through empty corridors. There are plenty of ordinary explanations for the things people experience after hours.
Usually, one of those explanations is probably right.
But if you're ever alone in a school after dark and hear footsteps behind you, try stopping for a moment.
If the footsteps stop too, you may have a slightly bigger problem.
