This is one of the oldest known depictions of the Ubume, illustrated by Japanese artist Sawaki Suushi in 1737 as part of the Hyakkai Zukan, a collection of illustrated yokai. She is shown exactly as the folklore describes her — blood-soaked from the waist down, hair wild and loose, clutching her infant against her chest with the desperation of someone who knows she is running out of time. There is nothing monstrous about her expression. She just looks like a mother who is not ready to let go.
